Sheira Dennis

Co-founder

Sheira Dennis has established a distinguished career in child development and applied behavior analysis, with a particular emphasis on developmental testing. Her professional journey highlights her expertise in evaluating, coordinating, and enhancing early intervention programs to support children’s developmental needs, especially within the context of the Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) program and other early childhood initiatives.

Early Career and Foundational Experience

Dennis‘s career in child development began in January 2010, serving as an Early Childhood Development Coach in Atlanta, Georgia. In this role, she worked directly with children aged one to five, focusing on improving five key developmental areas: social-emotional, communication, cognitive, and gross-motor skills. Her responsibilities included designing lesson plans tailored to individual needs, conducting classes, and creating positive educational environments that significantly enhanced student performance. This early experience laid the groundwork for Dennis’s commitment to child development and her later specialization in developmental testing.

Developmental Evaluator and Trainer

In July 2014, Dennis joined The ITD Group as an Early Intervention Specialist, providing therapeutic services under the Babies Can’t Wait program. Her role involved using measurable strategies to support child development, conducting quarterly reviews, and ensuring the effectiveness of the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). This experience gave her in-depth exposure to the practical aspects of developmental assessment and intervention.

By July 2016, Dennis had transitioned to a more specialized role as a Developmental Evaluator for the Babies Can’t Wait program, where she worked with The ITD Group agency. In this position, Dennis administered comprehensive developmental assessments using tools like the Battelle Developmental Inventory, 2nd Edition (BDI-2), and the Assessment Evaluation and Programming System for Infants and Children, 2nd Edition (AEPS-2). Her evaluations covered five critical domains: adaptive behavior, personal/social skills, communication, motor skills, and cognition. She played a crucial role in collaborating with IFSP teams to set developmental goals, interpret test results, and provide parents with strategies to support their children’s growth. Dennis‘s ability to communicate complex developmental insights to families and her leadership in training evaluators to use assessment tools were key to her success in this role.

Leadership in Training and Program Development

Dennis’s leadership skills were further demonstrated when she took on the role of Lead Trainer within The ITD Group, focusing on Intake and Service Coordination, as well as training Developmental Evaluators. She co-created training programs aligned with Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), designed to streamline the intake and service coordination processes. Her training programs emphasized the accurate administration of developmental assessments, including the BDI-2 and other relevant protocols, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and enhancing the quality of developmental services provided.

In July 2021, Dennis expanded her impact by becoming a Specialized Trainer within the Georgia system, where she designed and implemented the Early Intervention Specialist (EIS) training, specifically for District 4. Her training modules included both paper-based and digital protocols for administering the Battelle Developmental Inventory – 3rd Edition (BDI-3). Dennis provided one-on-one training support to Early Intervention Specialists, ensuring they were equipped to perform evaluations in line with current best practices.

Business Leadership and Strategic Oversight

In February 2014, Dennis took on a significant leadership role as the Owner and Executive Director of The ITD Group, an ABA therapy business. In this capacity, she managed the overall operations of the organization, including financial management, marketing, and staff recruitment. Under her leadership, The ITD Group has grown to employ 60 staff members, all dedicated to delivering high-quality ABA services. Dennis’s focus on individualized ABA program development has led to significant improvements in the skills and behaviors of clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other behavioral needs.

Educational Background and Ongoing Professional Development

Dennis‘s commitment to her field is underscored by her academic pursuits. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Georgia State University and a Master of Science in Education from Kaplan University. Currently, she is furthering her expertise with a Master of Psychology in Applied Behavior Analysis at Purdue University, with an expected graduation in Fall 2024. Her ongoing education highlights her dedication to remaining at the forefront of developments in applied behavior analysis and developmental testing.

Conclusion

Sheira Dennis’s career reflects a deep commitment to the developmental needs of children, particularly those with developmental delays and disorders. Through her roles as a developmental evaluator, trainer, and business leader, Dennis has significantly contributed to the field of early intervention. Her work has not only improved the lives of countless children and families but has also advanced the standards of developmental testing and early childhood education.
